Water Conservation Indoors

Are You Water Conservation Minded?

Water conservation is an important issue. Water is our greatest natural resource and we cannot live without it. To ensure that future generations will have water, conservation and quality measures should be taken now.

Below are some questions to help you understand what must be done now. There are an indoor and an outdoor water use set of questions to see where you stand on each issue. The explanation to the answers follow each question. See if you can help. The correct answers are highlighted in green.

When you use water indoors:

1. Do you use a low flow water restrictor faucet or showerhead? Yes No

You should use these, the restriction washers work like your garden hose high pressure nozzle. By restricting you add artificial pressure, while saving gallons of water each time you bathe.

2. Does the water run while you brush your teeth? Yes No

Please turn off your faucet and save up to two or three gallons during the two minutes you brush.

3. Do you have a water saver toilet? Yes No

These toilets have a smaller tank and use about 1 ˝ - 2 gallons of water. If you have an old toilet, you can place a brick or a ˝ gallon milk carton full of water into the corner of the tank, away from the flapper and ball-cock assembly, to conserve water. This will displace that volume of water and save at least that amount every time you flush. You can also adjust the float on the assembly to a lower, just as effective level, (this may take a few tries to get it exactly right).

4. Do you have a toilet that runs sporadically, (you hear water running every few minutes into the tank)? Yes No

If you have this problem, you may need to replace the flapper. To see if this is the problem, Home Depot and Lowe’s have a dye packet, usually free, to detect a leak here.  If this is not the problem, you may have a leak at one of the gaskets at either the water connection or between the tank and the bowl. Replace or repair ASAP.

5. Do any of your faucets run or drip water into the sink, tub or toilet bowl? Yes No

Leaky faucets can waste an enormous amount of water during the course of the month between your bills. A small drip can leak up to hundreds of gallons of water per day.
